The property of sound that leads to the formation of echoes is called reflection. Reflection occurs when sound waves bounce off of a hard surface (such as a wall or mountain) and return to the listener. When a sound wave encounters a hard surface, it is partially absorbed by the surface and partially reflected back. The reflected sound wave is heard as an echo.
