The title of Shakespearean play translated into Hindi as Durlabh Bandhu is Merchant of Venice. The play was translated in 1880 by Bharatendu Harishchandra. Harishchandra is also considered to be the father of modern Hindi literature and Durlabh Bandu (Dependable Friend) is regarded as one of the most popular adaptations of The Merchant of Venice published right away after the passing of the Vernacular Press Act of 1879.
