According to recent reports -

The government of India has banned many websites and URLs with the help of internet service providers or under the direction of the courts.


In 2015, the Indian government banned at least 857 adult content sites and 170 objectional sites. In 2016, Indian government further banned 200 URLs which are providing escort services.


Any person visiting or viewing information from torrent site and blocked URLs in India would be in jail for 3 years with penalty of Rs 3 lakh.

Internet censorship in India is selectively practiced by both central and state governments. DNS filtering and educating service users for optimumr usage is an active strategy adapted by the government to keep a tab on the Internet content.

In March 2011, the Government banned several websites like Typepad, Mobango, Clickatell.

In August 2015, the government banned 857 sites for their pornographic contents.

In June 2016, the government further banned over 200 URLs for providing 'Escort Services'.

In September 2016, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare confirmed that Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo! had agreed to censor all information  related to prenatal sex discernment. This was done on their respective search engines in accordance with the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994.

Sites like Vimeo, The Pirate Bay, Torrentz and other torrent sites were allegedly blocked by Reliance Communications, on orders from Department of Telecom.
