The decision to effect the Partition of Bengal (Bengali: বঙ্গভঙ্গ) was announced on 19 July 1905 by the Viceroy of India, Curzon. The partition took place on 16 October 1905 and separated the largely Muslim easternareas from the largely Hindu western areas.

Bengal was divided by lord curzon on 16 Oct. 1905. When the announcement was made in 1905, The leaders of Bengal urged the people to boycott British goods. They wanted to put economic pressure on England. The movement spread very rapidly all over Bengal.
The date October 16, 1905 was a day of national mourning. Many people got killed, loads of people became homeless. Situation was very tough as people were going to search just a safe place all over.
