cell membrane is semipermeable membrane, it selectively allows the movement of solute, water, salts, etc. in and out. when the solute enters the cell membrane it increased the solute concentration inside the cell. water gradient outside the cell wall decreased, hence water started to move outside from the cell membrane and causing the cell to shrink.
