Siddhartha Gautama always believed he could best help others by giving up his wealth. He believed and made understood his people also that, "True happiness does not depend on wealth or fame".
People pray for wealth in order to avoid poverty. Gautama rejects birth and death in order to attain liberation. But if all dharmas are contained within each other, how can someone run away from one dharma to pursue a different one? Thats why Gautama told to ignore wealth for minds peace and happiness.
