I would like to say that MBA specialization depends upon your area of interest. People feel that they can work in any area provided they have enough salary. But believe me, this is not the case. 4-5 years down the line, you would be frustrated if you do not like the job. MBAs already get decent packages. So money wont be an issue later. So go for your interest. And if you are confused about interest, do dsome introspection else you may find it out once you join a course. Then the area which stimulates you mentally, would be the one to go after. But it is always better to go pre-decided.
In MBA, you may go for any stream that interests your. Here are some general choices-
If you take Finance, you may go into a wide range of roles like investment banking, corporate treasury, wealth management, asset management, equity research, corporate finance, treasury etc to name a few.If you want to contribute to making of a product or an idea, you may want to go into marketing which can give you roles as a marketing/sales/product manager looking after a particular area or a product as a whole.Operations is a field that you may consider if you like planning/optimisation of the supply chain/logistics/procurement etc.If you are looking to interacting with the employees, responsible for hiring/training and development, go for HR.
I have just covered the basic roles for the generic MBA specializations. There are many more roles and many more specializations offered.
As for your case, you can excel in any area that you find interesting. My engineer colleagues with workex in IT have also gone into core finance roles by working hard on their profiles. To show you are interested in a particular field, first of all, you should have the required knowledge. So study a lot and understand the basics really well. Thereafter, you can do certification courses, if you feel the need for it and want to differentiate yourself. CFA, FRM, FLIP and NCFM are the most common certifications although the latter doesn't hold much value. You will get competition from commerce background students, but once you master the concepts you would be considered no lesser.
Coming to HR. HR is a 'neccessary evil' as some of my friends like calling it. It is not a support function but is very important to the organisation. People stereotype it with less pay and even lesser work. But it is not the case. Here also you need to perform well to get ahead in the race and then you get rewarded with great incentives. In market slumps, the workforce is reduced in general and firing is also the task of HR only. The proportionate reduction may lead to the axe falling on them as well. But all said, it is also an important function in the business and helps in strategy formulation as well.
So I have just given you the criteria to think about for deciding your career. Find what motivates you and which field you would be excited to work in. Then choose that without any qualms. If it is truly what you want to do, then work hard and no one can stop you from succeeding.
Hope this helps.
All the best!
