Answer :

  • In antiferromagnetism, the equal magnitude of magnetic moment associated with unpaired electrons are oppositely oriented and cancel out each others magnetic moment.
  • The net magnetic moment is zero.
  • The structure is similar to that of ferromagnetic substances, but just oppositely oriented.
  • The most important example of antiferromagnetism is MnO.

Extra Information :

The different Magnetic substances other than Antiferromagnetic substances are :

  • Ferromagnetic : These substances show magnetic moment without being influenced by magnetic field. The magnetic domains are in the same direction. Ex : Fe, No, Co.
  • Diamagnetic : These substances are weakly repelled by the magnetic field. It is how by the substances whose atoms have fully filled orbitals. Ex : H2O, NaCl.
  • Paramagnetic : These substances are weakly effected by the magnetic field. It can be seen in substances whose atoms have unpaired electrons. Ex : O2, Fe3+.
