When proteins and lipids are transported between the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus then there are two types of systems that are formed.
They are:
Retrograde transport: The outside proteins are packed together in the Golgi vesicles that then fuse with the ER.
Anterograde transport: The synthesized proteins contain sequences that aim to reach their destination. Some of them are packed to form cis-Golgi cisternae.
