Chhatrapati Shivaji and his Forts -

1. Chhatrapati Shivaji was a Greatest Warrior of Maharashtra who is well-known for his Guerilla warfare.

2. He was the first person to protect the Mumbai coast from attackers and to form 'Navy.'

3. He was a Good Administrator and is well-known for his -

4. As we pass through the Western Ghats, along the Konkan Coast, We see many Forts that are neglected and are not properly maintained.

5. Many of these Forts were built by Shivaji Maharaj. However, we can attribute 9 Famous Forts built by Shivaji that are still very famous. They are:

  • Torna Fort -

Shivaji conquered 'Prachandgad' at a very young age of 16 years. He renamed it as 'Torna' and built a massive fort here.

  • Sinhagad Fort -

Shivaji's Military Head 'Tanaji Malusare' fought a brutal battle with Mughals for this Fort and lost his life. His brother took his charge and won this Fort. Shivaji remorsefully exclaimed, "We won the Fort, But lost the Lion." This event explains the importance of this Fort during Shivaji Era.

  • Raigad Fort -

'Raigad' was the capital of Maratha Empire. It was in this Fort that Shivaji was Crowned the King and It was here where He breathed his last. Although in 1818, Britishers looted this Fort and tried to destroy it, much of its glory still remains.

  • Shivneri Fort -

Shivneri was the birthplace of Shivaji. This fort consist of a small temple of Goddess 'Shivai Devi' - after whom He was named.

  • Vijaydurg Fort -

Vijaydurg is encircled by Waghotan River. Big Ships cannot enter here. This Fort was used as an anchor for Maratha warships. This Sea-Fort cannot be penetrated and hence It was considered one of the Best Victories of Shivaji Maharaj.

  • Sindhudurg Fort -

This Fort was once a Powerful Naval Base of Maratha Kingdom. It contains a Temple dedicated to Shivaji Maharaj that preserves his Footprints.

It is still very beautiful Sea-Fort and a Famous Tourist-Destination. Small ships or ferries take passengers to this place. Many Films are shot here.

  • Rajgad Fort -

Shivaji spent 26 years of his life here. This Fort contains many Memorable Events of Shivaji's life like -

a) Afzal Khan's head was buried here.

b) Shivaji's son 'Rajaram' was born here.

c) Shivaji's Queen 'Saibai' died here.

d) Shivaji escaped from Agra (Aurangzeb had imprisoned Shivaji) and came to this Fort.

Shivaji defeated Afzal Khan here and took-over his territory.

  • Lohagad Fort -

This Fort is along the Trade-Route to Khandala. This Fort was Prime attraction to other kings.
