Which two ideas contributed to the American Revolution?
Answers
Hi,
Your answer :
The American Revolution was an armed conflict that lasted eight long years. It also constituted a civil war between British and American subjects, as well as a rebellion against the colonial authorities and an insurrection against the King of England (George III) and the monarchical regime. It was finally a war of "national liberation", the first of modern history. If the American revolution had a major impact on the North American continent, we could clearly determine the causes. As far as the linguistic question is concerned, it does not seem to have been a major concern, since American politicians associated linguistic interventionism with a monarchist practice that prevailed in Europe. Now, all the practices which recalled the monarchy and its excesses were banished. It is therefore the non-linguistic intervention that characterizes this era of American history.
1 The strengthening of British power (1763-1776)
With the treaty of Paris of 1763 which officially put an end to the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) between France and Great Britain, all of New France, with the exception of Louisiana ceded to Spain, officially became a British possession. From its vast empire in North America, France retained only the tiny islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon south of Newfoundland. Meanwhile, the war in British North America had brought glory to the English generals, death to the privates, fortune to the merchants, unemployment to the poor and the economic collapse of the Amerindian peoples.
However, in order to defeat the French in Canada and Acadia, Britain had to borrow huge sums of money to pay for its expensive military operations. Debt interest alone cost the British Treasury more than four million pounds a year. The British government then had the idea to have some of these heavy expenses reimbursed by the Thirteen Colonies (the only ones who could pay), thanks to direct taxes on products such as tea, wine, sugar, molasses , newspapers, etc. It seemed normal for the British government to pay the New England settlers some of the expenses incurred for their profits.
On the other hand, the representatives of the Thirteen Colonies no longer saw the value of maintaining this expensive British military apparatus because of the fall of New France. Moreover, the settlers of New England had waited only for the English victory to finally continue their expansion towards the west. Now, King George III had just begun his reign in 1760 and he had every intention of strengthening the royal prerogatives over his American colonies. He considered that these settlers were "British subjects" who had the primary duty to comply with his decisions.
Two problems would arise and greatly reduce the royal authority. On the one hand, the colonial assemblies held important powers, similar to those in the hands of the English Parliament, for example, to vote taxes and expenses, not to mention to ensure the initiative of the laws. On the other hand, the geographical distance and the obstacle that constituted a vast ocean made more random any attempt of domination over the Thirteen Colonies.
Good bye :)
