Ozone reacts with both organic and inorganic compounds. One of the examples of organic reactions with ozone is ozonolysis. In this reaction, alkenes, alkynes or azo compounds react with ozone.
In the ozonolysis of alkenes, ozone oxidizes alkene to form alcohols, aldehydes, ketones or carboxylic acid. Ozonolysis of alkynes also takes place in which ozone reacts with alkynes to form acid anhydride or diketone product.
