In Gujarat, high rugged areas receive a good rainfall than the plains. The rainfall in the state increases with the gradient from the plains to the mountains and hills spread and from north to south.

Consequently, forests are therefore concentrated in the hilly parts of the state. Sarastro and east Gujarat are areas which have adequate forest cover at about 19.66 lakh hectares of land under forest.

The growth of a tropical deciduous forest is found in the districts of Panchayats and Saba kantha in north-east Gujarat and Junagadh in Saurashtra are other important areas of forest cover.

The south and south-eastern parts of the state support the typified by teak, shorea, and robusta for which the district of Bulsar is famous.

The forest of the state can be divided into the following broad categories: Moist Deciduous Forests, Dry Deciduous Forests,  Thorny Forests
