The Dawes Severality Act put an end to cultural and family ties that bonded people together. Boarding schools came up which did not encourage practising local rituals or speaking the local language.

It also ended the amount of land allotted to American Indians. Therefore, many of them ended up losing their hold over property and becoming landless. The original allocation of 138 million acres to American Indians in 1887 was reduced to 48 million acres in 1934.
