Macedonian troops engaged with Porus’ warriors in the Battle of the Hydaspes

In this decisive engagement, Alexander and his 50,000 Eurasian troops were pitted against King Porus of the Paurava Kingdom in India and his 60,000 troops, including 85-200 war elephants. This was the fourth and last pitched battle ever fought by Alexander and was by far his most costly battle, suffering over 1,000 casualties and mortally wounding his prized horse, Bucephalus.

What makes this battle his greatest was the way he accomplished his victory. Alexander was known for pulling a variety of tricks to win his battles, from the famed fake out at the Battle of Gaugamela to the construction of his land bridge at the Siege of Tyre. The Battle of the Hydaspes would be his most daring maneuver to date.

In the Battle of the Hydaspes, Alexander was pitted against Porus across the Hydaspes River (now called the Jhelum River) in the Punjab. Both commanders set up shop right across from one another to prevent the other from crossing the river. The Hydaspes was deep and fast enough that any attacking force crossing the river would most likely be ambushed and swept by the river itself. This river would not stop the fabled Son of Zeus however, and Alexander made preparations for a crossing.
