German chemist Friedrich Wöhler first synthesized urea in 1828 by the following reaction
AgNCO+NH4Cl→(NH2)2CO+AgClAgNCO+NH4Cl→(NH2)2CO+AgCl
This was the first time an organic compound had been made in the laboratory starting from inorganic materials, and this lent a death blow to the vital force theory, that a 'vital (life) force' was necessary for the creation of organic compounds.
