The empire formally existed from 1674 with the coronation of Shivaji as the Chhatrapati and ended in 1818 with the defeat of Peshwa Bajirao II at the hands of the British East India Company. • The Marathas became a major power during the decline of the Mughal Empire. Several factors contributed to the rise of the Marathas in the 16th and 17th centuries.
• The physical environment of the Maratha country developed certain unique characteristics among the Marathas.The mountainous region and  dense forests made them brave soldiers and they adopted guerrilla tactics.
• They built a number of forts in the mountains. The spread of the bhakti movement in Maharashtra under the influence of spiritual leaders such as Ramdas, Vaman Pandit, Tukaram and Eknath instilled in them a spirit of religious unity  and Shivaji .
• Maharaj bestowed much needed political unity. The Marathas held important positions in the administration and military system of the Deccan sultanates of Bijapur and Ahmadnagar, and their power and influence in governmental affairs  had grown as the Mughals invaded the Deccan.
• There were a number of influential Maratha families, such as the Mores, the Ghatages, the Nimbalkians, etc., but the Marathas did not have  large, well-established states like the Rajputs.Shahji Bhonsle and his son Shivaji Maharaj are credited with establishing a powerful Maratha state in.
