Presidency cities during the British rule in India referred to those cities which were multifunctional.


By multifunctional it means that they were cities which had ports, army camps, educational institutions, museums, libraries and etc.


The presidency cities built by British were Bombay, Calcutta and Madras. Bombay was made the capital in 1819 of Bombay Presidency.
