well, electronic configuration of elements are done according to the atomic no. of elements. u need to learn first 20 elements because these elements are mostly use at this level. once you know the atomic no. of elements you can easily arrange them in shells. for example the atomic no. of Na (sodium) is 11 . so it's configuration would be 2,8,1 and the valency is 1 . valency is determined by seeing the no. of electrons in the outer most shell.
