pumice stones are usually added to stop bumping of water
reason: by adding pumice stones we help the formation of bubbles which prevents the superheating of water which can cause explosion. see as we know pumice stones have large surface area due to porous structure by the virtue of which they have airs in their pores , when kept in boiling water they aid in the formation of bubbles and dissipation of heat of super hot water becomes smooth
