While heating Lead Nitrate the brown fumes emitted is Nitrogen dioxide.

Explanation:

  • When Lead Nitrate is heated at high temperature it decomposes into smaller compounds.
  • The compounds that are formed are lead oxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxygen.
  • Lead oxide is a dirty white compound which settles in the ‘bottom of the test tube’, nitrogen dioxide gas evolved from the test tube producing a brown fumes.
  • The presence of oxygen can be detected by introducing a burning splinter which when comes in contact with oxygen bursts into flames.
