Oxygen is soluble in water but only to a small extent.

There are two main reasons for low solubility of oxygen into water:-

1) Usually gases are less soluble in liquids.

2) Oxygen is a non polar molecule and on the other hand water is polar, therefore oxygen can dissolve into water only by dipole-induced dipole and Van Der Waals interactions.

Therefore oxygen is soluble only to a small extent in water.

So, the oxygen that we let into aquariums (more suitable word would be fish tanks) remains mostly undissolved therefore forming bubbles.

Hope it helps ^_^

ruthi1: thank u very much . I asked many of my teachers but couldn't get the answer. u did it

The reason that when oxygen it let into aquariums why are bubbles formed is because since the solubility is only to a small extent.

The two main reasons for low solubility of oxygen in water are :-
1>since the both molecules are opposite in nature i.e polar and non-polar so they are insoluble in each other .
2>We know that gases are basically insoluble in water due to there intermolecular forces .
