While performing the experiment on tracing the path of a ray of light passing through a glass slab a student traced the path of ray as shown along side .what is wrong ??

Medium1 is if we air then i=30°

Medium 2 is if we consider r=?

According to Snell's law

u1*sini =u2*sinr

1*sin30°=1.5sinr

r=19.47°

Apply Snell's law

u1 sini= u2 sine

u1=1

Sin30= 1/2

u2= 1.5

So

1*1/2= 1.5 sine

e=sin-(1/3)

Several collapsed answers correctly pointed out the math to achieve the 19.47 degrees. I'll thus try in words:

Starting with Snellius' law:

n sin alpha equals n' sin alpha'.

Which quantities are known? Well, n (of air) is (approx.) 1, alpha is given as 30 degrees. Thus, left side of equation is 1 x sin (30°), and thus may be calculated as 0.5.

Of the right side, you have 1.5 sin alpha'. You are interested in the angle in the slab, which is alpha'.

So solving for alpha' you get 0.5/1.5=sin alpha' and consequently alpha' is sin^-1 of 1/3. This, as pointed out in the collapsed answers, is about 19.5 degrees.
