Ijardar is a term which was basically used to describe revenue farmers. This kind of system was prevalent in the Mughal era.

Warren Hastings was responsible for the launching of this system in 1773.

Ijardars were mainly responsible for the collection of taxes through bidding. They were handed over this responsibility by the officials of the East India Company. The highest bidder was appointed as the Ijardar for a definite period of time.
