Jacobins proved to be the most successful of the political clubs which gained popularity after the Constitution of 1791 came(provided political rights mainly to rich) .These clubs provided platforms to people to discuss goverment policies. And yep, take action too.
Leader – Maximilian Robespierre
Events of 1792-
Jacobins planned an uprising; mainly parisians .
August 10- They captured the king in the Palace of Tuileries. Later assembly voted to imprison the royal family.
Elections were held. Key feature- All men above 21 years of age , irrespective of weath ,could vote. Newly elected assembly was called “Convention”.
September 21- France was declared republic . Putting in simpler words, people could now vote their goverment and it’s head too.
Robespierre came into power. Although the period from 1793 to 1794 is reffered to as Reign of terror because of harsh measures , the revolution was a significant phase of French Revolution.
1. The royal family was tried in court. Louis XVI was executed publicly on charge of treason. Similar was the faith of the Queen.
Jacobins publicly declared the end of oppressive rule of king. People were freed from the demons of monarchial rule after centuries off being under them.
2. Jacobins were from less wealthy sections of society. They had never been to power before. They were the most oppressed of people. Rejoice!!
3. For the very first time voting rights crossed the borders of wealth. Notice * key feature*. Struggle for women was far ahead of them.
4. Robespierre goverment sought to bring equality through measures like forcing all citizens to eat equality bread( made of wholewheat). Even French men and women were called Citoyen and Citoyenne instead of traditional Monsieur and Madame. Well ,as obvious ,these were less welcomed.
5. The Goverment held revolutionary festivals to remind people of the holy history. As you see, these were means to win loyalty of people.
