Digestion in ruminants. Grass eating animals (herbivores) like the cow, deer, ox, buffalo and sheep swallow the food without chewing. ... This process is called rumination, and such animals are called ruminants. Though their main diet is plants, they are unable to digest, because of lack of cellulose breaking enzymes.

Rumination is the focused attention on the symptoms of one's distress, and on its possible causes and consequences, as opposed to its solutions, according to the Response Styles Theory proposed by Nolen-Hoeksema (1998).

Ruminants are animals which chew the cud. Examples are sheep, goats, and cattle.
