Marco Polo (a traveler) introduced the woodblock printing in Italy in the year 1295. Thereon, the woodblock printing spread throughout Europe. The main reason why woodblock printing was not popular among the aristocratic circles lies in the fact that the luxury versions were still written by hand quite expensive vellum. They believed that woodblock printing contained cheap vulgarities.

The copies of printed books were bought by the traders and students in the university centers.
