the 162 km long Suez canal was built in Egypt under the leadership of Ferdinand de Lesseps , who laid the foundation for the Suez canal company. . Opened in 1869 , it connects the Mediterranean sea and red sea and offers a shorter route to Asia than the ones earlier taken by ships ; thanks to this new canal,there was no longer any need to take the longer roundabout route along the coast of south Africa .
