The term cell was coined by Robert Hooke in 1665. He discovered cells the first time under his self made microscope. The cells looked like small closed compartments that's why he gave them the name"Cell".
The cell theory was proposed by Schleiden ans Schwann which tells that
1. Cell is the basic unit and functional unit of life.
2. All the plants and animals are made up of cells
3. All the cells arise from pre-existing cells( which was suggested by Virchow)

Cell Theory:
Two german biologists Matthias Jakob Schleiden and Theodor Schwann proposed the cell theory of life. The cell theory states the following:
All living organisms, plants, and animals are made of cells.
Cells are responsible for the structural and function units of all living organisms.
New cells arise from pre-existing cells by cell division.
(Virchow later expanded the cell theory by suggesting that all cells arise from pre existing cells)
