Answer:

The sex of the baby is determined by the chromosomes of the father :

We can say that for Sex Determination , the father is the determinant of the sex of the embryo inside the mother's womb.

The father produces 2 types of sex chromosomes namely :

  • X Chromosome
  • Y Chromosome

While the mother only produces 1 type of sex chromosomes namely :

  • X Chromosome

While meeting of the gametes during fertilisation , the chromosomes held by the sperms determine the sex of the embryo.

Let's see the probabilities in a tabular format :

\begin{tabular}{| c| c | c |}\cline{1-3}Male\:\rightarrow&&\\Female\:\downarrow &X&Y \\\cline{1-3}X &XX &XY \\\cline{1-3}X &XX &XY \\\cline{1-3}\end{tabular}

So we can see that there is 50% probability of both sons and daughters to be born.

As we know that a female has two X chromosomes and male has a X and a Y chromosome

Semen contains almost equal amount of X as well as Y chromosomes

Hence there is an equal probability of the egg to be fertilized by an x or y chromosome

The sex of the baby is decided at the time of fertilization itself by the father
