About Jabalpur

According to the mythological reference, Jabalpur was the tapasya bhumi of the sage Jabalie, from whose name Jabalpur derived its name. It is a place where Lord Shiva defeated three great demons. The factual history states that Jabalpur was a part of the Maurya Empire, as the Ashokan relics dating 300 BCE, have been found in that place. After the decline of the empire, Jabalpur became the city-state before it was annexed by the Satavahana dynasty. After that Jabalpur had been under the reign of many empires and dynasties like Gupta Empire, Kalachuri Dynasty, Marathas, Gondwana rulers, Colonial regime and Jagirdari system until 1947. Jabalpur served as an important place in the history of Indian freedom struggle as Gandhi, Bose, Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel and many eminent freedom fighters stayed and continued their struggle for independence from this place. After independence, Jabalpur became a free province in the state of Madhya Pradesh and is a proud part of the state now.
