- In 1818, Fort Glaster, near Kolkata, established the first modern textile cotton mill. This mill, however, was not able to survive and must have been closed.
- In 1854 a local Parsi entrepreneur CN Dewar set up the first successful modern textile cotton factory in Mumbai.. In the 1870s there was a great growth of the cotton textiles industry.
- By 1875-76 there had been an increase of 47 mills, of which alone in Mumbai were over 60%. Until the outbreak of World War I in 1914, industry continued to progress. The number of factories exceeded 271 and employed approximately 2.6 lakhs.
