Rabindranath Tagore, the great poet, artist and Nobel laureate returned the title of Knighthood as a part of the programme  against anti-movement action of the government.

Rabindranath Tagore returned the award as a symbol of protest against the Jallianawala Bagh massacre of Amritsar on 13th April 1919 in which about one thousand people were killed by the British forces.
