According to his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom in chapter 3 of Part One Mandela’s father died of what he assumed was a lung related illness at his mothers (one of his father’s wives) homestead in Qunu. Nelson Mandela himself lived with his mother at the time and was nine years old.
