Edward Jenner was the first who gave the concept of immunization and vaccination. He is a contributor to the development of small pox vaccine. Edward jenner's innovation leaded to the ultimate eradication of smallpox. He made the foundation of immunology, the science of immunization.
Many immunization programmes were carried out to eradicate small pox because small pox can cause epidemics, and people were afraid of this. Later the small pox was eradicated with the help of vaccine.
Here's the story of this great scientist.
One day, Edward Jenner observed that people suffering from a mild disease, cow pox were not suffering from smallpox, which was a more severe disease. At that time, girls who used to milk the cow got cow pox, and it causes rashes in the hand.
Jenner decided to test his observations of cow pox and small pox. He took some pus(yellowish fluid) with a sterile needle from the rashes of a cow pox infected girl. Then, he injected into a uninfected boy, who soon got cow pox. After his recovery, Jenner injected pus from a small pox patient. Luckily, the boy didn't get you smallpox and Jenner's experiment was successful.
After inoculation (i.e. Vaccination only), vaccine using the cowpox virus became the primary defense against Small pox. A person suffering from cow pox virus, gets the ability to recognise a similar virus of small pox. This helps in fighting with small pox virus more efficiently.
✏ The Small pox has been successfully eradicated from the world through immunization.
