In Bengal, the manufacture of jute, by application of European machinery, was not introduced before 1854, when Mr. George Auckland, a coffee planter of Ceylon, founded the first mill at Rishra, near Serampur, in the district of Hooghly, which is now known as the “Wellington Mills”.
