Sinhalese form majority in terms of population in Sri Lanka. As per the census of 2012, the Sinhalese constitute 74.9% of Sri Lankan population.

The Sinhalese, mostly Buddhists are an Indo-Aryan ethnic group. It is said that Sinhalese are the descendants of the people who migrated from North India. The largest minority is Tamils, mostly Hindus who came from South India. The Sri Lanka witnessed a long ethnic conflict between these two groups.
