India has seen many social reformers over the years who have worked for the betterment of society
and have fought against the social evils. Some of them are:
Raja Ram Mohan
Roy 1772 - 1833 - He was from Bengal. He fought against the practice of Sati Pratha.
Ishwar Chandra
Vidyasagar - He worked for the upliftment of the status of women in India. He supported widow remarriage. He contributed a lot in the
field of education.
Swami Vivekananda – He preached against religious dogmas and superstitions.
Swami Dayananda
Saraswati - He argued against the wrong things which were being propagated in the
name of religion. He believed that caste system should not be based on birth but should be on the basis of occupation. He started a campaign against
untouchability and child marriage.
All these social reformers faced a lot of obstacles and protests from the society but they continued their good work and contributed to the betterment of the society.
