Raja Ram mohan Roy

It condemned social evils such as casteism, untouchability, child marriage and the Sati system. It was due to the efforts of Raja Ram mohan Roy that Lord William Bentick abolished Sati system in 1829 by declaring it an offence.

Early British policy

The first formal British ban was imposed in 1798, in the city of Calcutta only. The practice continued in surrounding regions. In the beginning of the 19th century, the evangelical church in Britain, and its members in India, started campaigns against sati.

The Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929, passed on 28 September 1929, in the Imperial Legislative Council of India, fixed the age of marriage for girls at 14 years and boys at 18 years which was later amended to 18 for girls and 21 for boys.
