Qutub-ud-din Aibak founded the Delhi Sultanate.

Events that led to the foundation of Delhi Sultanate were:

  • Muizzuddin Mohammad-bin-Sam or Mohammad Ghori(last Turkish conqueror of North India)  started invading india in AD 1175 and captured Multan and Punjab. Then he wished to conquer Delhi and marched towards it.
  • The King of Delhi Prithviraj Chauhan completely routed the Ghori's forces in AD 1191 in the First Battle of Tarain.
  • Then Mohammad Ghori again attacked Delhi after a year. But this time Prithviraj was defeated to the hands of Ghori in the Second Battle of Tarain in AD 1192. And Mohammad Ghori captured Delhi and Ajmer and thus laid down the foundation of muslim rule in India.
  • Mohammad Ghori also defeated Jaichandra(ruler of Kannauj) in AD 1194.
  • Bakhtiyar Khilji, general of Ghori, annexed East India and destroyed Nalanda and Vikramshila University.
  • Mohammad Ghori had no son and died in 1206, leaving Qutub-ud-din Aibak as in-charge.
  • Qutub-ud-din assumed the sovereign powers in 1206 and founded first ruling dynasty of Delhi Sultanate- The Slave or Ilbari Dynasty.
