After WW1 a harsh peace treaty was to be imposed on Ottoman Empire and many Muslims wanted to defend him and his powers so a Khilafat Committee was formed in 1919. Shaukat Ali and Mohammad Ali and others lead this. gandhiji saw this as an opportunity to unite Muslims and Hindus and start a NCM movement in support of khilafat as well as for swaraj.
