Sunil Gavaskar's family helped him to develop his talent as a cricketer.

  • Sunil had inherited his parents' passion for sports as his father was a club player and Madhav Mantri 's maternal uncle was a cricket player.
  • Once he was in school he started showing up his batting style.
  • He used to polish his batting skills in mid-afternoon holidays with his mother and a houseboy, and even captained the St. Xavier's High School team at his home

Playing cricket was in the family’s very soul. Gavaskar’s father was a good club cricketer in his days and a keen student of the game. Gavaskar’s mother was the first player with whom he would play cricket. She used to bowl to him in the small gallery of their house where he and his mother played their ‘daily match’ with a tennis ball.

His uncle, Madhav Mantri had played for India; and whenever Gavaskar would go to his house, he would hold his pullover and caress it longingly. He would often tell Gavaskar that if he wished to possess a similar pullover for himself, he would have to work very hard for it. So all this cricketing environment in the family helped him become a great cricketer.
