In 1793, Permanent Settlement was introduced by Governor-General of India Charles Cornwallis. But in early nineteenth century changed the system of revenue as Permanent Settlement created problems.

So in North Western provinces Mahalwari System replaced the permanent settlement.

In the south territories ryotwar (or ryotwari) was devised. It was tried on some small scale by Captain Alexander Read. This region under ryotwar was taken after from Tipu Sultan in 1799 i.e. Mysore provinces.

Later Governor of Madras Thomas Munro gradually extended this system all over south india.

In this system the settlement was directly made with cultivators (ryots). Before revenue assessment survey of Fields was made.
