who inspires you most the mother or father and how?

My mother has inspired me more in the ways of mothering, but not from the aspect you would think. She’s been more of a cautionary tale of what not to do. My brother is four years younger than I am. He and I could not be more different. I have always been fiercely independent and a self starter. I have woken myself up in the morning via alarm clock since I was like 7. I made good grades, went to college, graduated, got a job, mostly always took care of myself post graduation. Never have I been actually praised for any of this. It was always expected that I do it, so I did. My brother who is 30, has never had a job for more than a few weeks, lives at home, isn’t educated, and yet is somehow her favorite. He can do no wrong. He is currently in a certificate program, and I have been asked to pat him on the head every step of the way, which I haven’t. I have said, and continue to say, that when he is employed for a month, and stays employed, I will offer him the praise of the world. You ask how this is inspirational? I have a son. Like my younger brother, he too is perfect and without flaw. My soon to be three year old can frankly be an asshole, but he is perfect and wonderful according to my mom. I am inspired daily to keep my son at a human level, and to push him to do things for himself. I am inspired daily that my son needs to learn how to do things for himself, and to take care of himself (albeit at an age appropriate level), so that as he ages not only will he actually be able to take care of himself, but he will have the confidence to do so. It is the job of a parent to raise a child, and send them out into the world to go and do good things, but on their own. All I want is for my son to be successful in whatever he decides to do. Telling him he is perfect and wonderful everyday won’t foster that.
