Under the reign of the Maratha Empire, the Kathi which was later on renamed ShivKathi was adopted as the unit of measurement for land revenue assessment.

Kathi which refers to a measuring stick was adopted by Malik Ambar and was used as a method of marking land boundaries.

This unit of measurement was the official measurement unit and was applicable even during Chatrapti Shivaji Maharaj.
