Tea requires a temperature ranging from 21°C to 29°C. Tea grows well in the regions which receive rainfall in between 150-200 cm. The soil should be well drained. However, stagnant water damages the tea crops

The major tea-producing states in India are: Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala

Tea is a beverage crop. Tea is often called the ‘Queen of beverages’. It is a plantation crop introduced by the Britishers in 1823. Geographical conditions for growth of tea:

a) TEMPERATURE:

Tea requires uniformly high temperature 20°-30° C throughout the  year. Frost is harmful for the tea leaves.

b) RAINFALL:

An annual rainfall of an 150 -300 cm is essential for the growth of tea.

c) SOIL:

Tea requires a deep acidic and fertile soil.

d) LAND:

Tea is grown on well drained gentle hilly slopes and Valley sides.

e) LABOUR:

Tea is a labour intensive crop. It requires cheap, skilled labour for picking tea leaves.

Production:

Tea is a commercial crop in India. India is the second largest producer and exporter of tea in the world

AREAS OF CULTIVATION:

a)Assam:

Assam is the largest producer of tea in India. Tea is grown on the valley sides of Brahmaputra and Duar region

b) West Bengal:

Tea is grown in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts. Darjeeling tea has a special flavour. This flavour is due to the slow growth of the tea plant under high humidity and low temperature.

c) Southern India:

Tea is grown on the slopes of Nilgiris, Cardamon and Anamalai hills, Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Malabar Coast (Kerala), Coorg region ( Karnataka) and Ratnagiri (Maharashtra). These are important areas of tea production.

d) Other areas:

Ranchi plateau in Jharkhand.

Palampur in Himachal Pradesh.

Kumaon and Garhwal Hills in Uttarakhand.

Tripura region.
