A French inventor named Etienne Oehmichen flew one for a kilometer in 1924. The first truly successful helicopter was designed by Igor Sikorsky in Stanford, Connecticut in 1939. The Germans invented the first helicopter with the Focke-woulf FA61 in 1936.
