An alibi is a form of defense used in criminal procedure wherein the accused attempts to prove that he or she was in some other place at the time the alleged offense was committed. The Criminal Law Deskbook of Criminal Procedure[1] states: "Alibi is different from all of the other defenses; it is based upon the premise that the defendant is truly innocent." In Latin, alibī means "somewhere else."

A claim or piece of evidence that one was elsewhere when an act, typically a criminal one, is alleged to have taken place. Or an excuse or pretext. For eg. one person says that I was in China when the crime took place but another person says that I was somewhere else when the crime took place.
