I could see why this confusion arises. The Cholas and Pandyas were both Tamil. Why couldn’t they be friends? Why did they fight?

This is not a very uncommon phenomena. In fact, it makes a lot of sense.

With two powerful kingdoms sharing a border, it is very common to see altercations and disputes between both, as one always wishes to increase their influence in the region and rule more territory. If both kingdoms were perfectly aligned in terms of their ideologies and their goals, they may as well have merged.

This can be seen in many other places around the world too. An example would be the American Civil War. If we applied the same logic as one could assume was applied to ask the initial question, these two groups should not have fought given the common language. But there was a difference in the interests of the states within the Union, which is what led to the conflict.

But you might notice that it is different today. Tamil people will speak highly of the Cholas and Pandyas! Why is that? If these groups fought, shouldn’t you support one over the other?

This is also not unheard of. As much as two groups will fight against each other, if they see a bigger threat that is threatening both of them, they will fight together against the common enemy. I’ve even read recently that the US President and Soviet Premier agreed to set aside their differences and fight together if the world was to be invaded by aliens during the Cold War![1]

Today, we don’t identify as a Chola or Pandya, but instead we identify as a Tamilan. This is due to the significant threat placed on the survival and sustainability of Tamil culture with events such as the European colonization of Tamilakam. It is simply a survival instinct.

We speak highly of both the Cholas and Pandyas because they are both Tamil. But that does not mean that they did not have their own conflicts when they existed

The Chola dynasty was one of the longest-ruling dynasties in the history of southern india. The earliest datable references to this Tamil dynasty are in inscriptions from the 3rd century BCE left by Ashoka, of the Maurya Empire. As one of the Three Crowned Kings of Tamilakam
