Kaspar is an old man who tells all about the war of Blenheim fought between the English and French to his grandchildren Wilhelmine and Peterkin ironically. He tells all the bad consequences of the war but repeats the line " but it was a famous victory" and " such things happen in a great victory".
Hope it helps.
